ESPN Suspends Leftist Anchor Who Called President Trump a “White Supremacist”

ESPN has suspended SportsCenter co-host Jemele Hill for two weeks after the controversial television personality called for a boycott of sponsors of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.

Hill had been the subject of a major media firestorm in September after calling President Donald Trump a “white supremacist” during a Twitter rant.

At that time, several media critics pointed out ESPN’s double-standard in the handling of political statements made by its employees. Former Major League Baseball pitching ace, and noted conservative, Curt Schilling was fired from his analyst position after posting an objection to biological men in women’s restrooms on Facebook. Britt McHenry, another former ESPN employee, was also told by the company to delete the word “conservative” from her Twitter biography.

ESPN’s suspension of Hill stems from the following series of Tweets from earlier this week:


The advertisers Hill was referring to in her call for a boycott included AT&T, Bank of America, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Ford Motor Company, Miller Coors, and PepsiCo. Ironically, AT&T and Bank of America are two of the most liberal companies in 2ndVote’s database having been found to support a wide range of leftist causes. Bank of America has even helped fund the controversial Southern Poverty Law Center.

ESPN released the following statement regarding Hill’s suspension:

Jemele Hill has been suspended for two weeks for a second violation of our social media guidelines. She previously acknowledged letting her colleagues and company down with an impulsive tweet. In the aftermath, all employees were reminded of how individual tweets may reflect negatively on ESPN and that such actions would have consequences. Hence this decision.

Not surprisingly, ESPN is now a target of leftist agitators like Al Sharpton who has called for boycott of the cable network and its advertisers. However, Clay Travis of Outkick the Coverage believes ESPN is now having to sleep in the very bed it made. He writes, “[ESPN] may never recover from the disastrous decision to embrace far left wing politics and alienate moderate and conservative viewers.”

And that’s the same message all NFL advertisers, and all corporations for that matter, should understand. Customers would rather be doing business with neutral companies, where their dollars aren’t funding the liberal agenda. Playing the left’s political game only exposes corporations to the left’s wrath when the tide turns.
