Each week 2ndVote assesses popular companies that either score well or score poorly and then try to provide alternatives that either better align with the 2ndVote values or should be avoided to the best of your ability. This series is called The Company Contrast, and the company we will be focusing on this week is Hanes Brands (3.67).

Hanes was founded in 1901 as the P.H. Hanes Knitting Company to make men’s underwear, and has since expanded to make all kinds of undergarments and products for men and women. Their brands now include Bali, Barely There, Beefy-T, Berlei, Bonds, Celebrity, Champion, Daisyfresh, Duofold, Hanes, Hanes Hosiery, J. E. Morgan, Just My Size, L’eggs, Maidenform, Name, One Hanes Places, Playtex, Rinbros, Ritmo, Sheer Energy, Silk Reflections, Sol, Tagless, and Wonderbra. Hanes Brands, Inc., as they’re known today, is headquartered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and is one of the few American clothing manufacturers still flourishing in the textile industry.

Hanes is engaged in social issues we support including Life, Basic Freedoms, and the Environment. Per their website, Hanes “was one of two apparel manufacturers named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere and garnered a spot on Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies for the third consecutive year.” Hanes is also an actively engaged supporter of the Salvation Army, a pro-life organization, and various Christian universities, per our own research findings. When Hanes comes up for an update later this year, their 2ndVote score will likely go up due to their engagement in environmental sustainability. We encourage consumers to buy Hanes products in all their brands!

We can’t say as much for their competitor, Nike (2.00). Nike has been embroiled in leftist social issues and denigrating the American flag, and earned the worst score possible in Life, Basic Freedoms, and the Environment per our scoring system. They provide financial and advocacy support to multiple abortion-funding organizations worldwide, including Planned Parenthood. We suggest avoiding Nike products. If you can’t find a Hanes alternative for the goods you need, you might also consider New Balance (2.83).
