In what may be the most tone-deaf defense of Planned Parenthood funding we’ve heard in a while, United Way claims that the number of chapters donating $2.7 million Planned Parenthood is “only a small number.”
2ndVote, which exposed the funding in a new report, disagrees. This morning, we joined pro-life leaders in blasting United Way’s arrogance. We also published the following video to highlight how sending 2,900 to kill unborn babies is a bad thing.
The tone-deafness of United Way’s “small number” claim is made worse by the fact that the rest of their statement uses Planned Parenthood’s double-speak to defend the donations. Just as Planned Parenthood claims that it does more than just abortions with its taxpayer and corporate funding, United Way argued that funding abortion is offset by “counseling services” and “family planning”:
Several local United Way partners provide professional family and individual counseling services. Local United Way-funded pregnancy related programs focus on community health maintenance (e.g. communicable disease prevention; medical care service; family planning; health education; public awareness services; and family preservation) and strengthening services like counseling and family life education.
At 2ndVote, we believe that it is necessary to expose United Way and Planned Parenthood’s other enablers to ensure a culture of life. We are grateful to Priests for Life’s Alveda King — Martin Luther King, Jr.’s niece — and the pro-life digital marketers at Life Advancement Group for joining us in blasting United Way’s appalling dismissal of its chapters’ donations to America’s largest abortion company.
United Way’s claim is made worse because its mission statement claims that it “improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.” Not by donating to Planned Parenthood, you don’t.
