Assault Weapons Ban

 

Along with the recent mid-term elections, many states had important ballot initiatives and laws that came up for a vote among the electorate. Among those, Measure 114 in Oregon has been a particularly contentious one. Measure 114 is such that it would institute new state-wide rules in Oregon for firearms purchasing, possession, and magazine capacities. For one, Oregonians would be required to obtain a permit and take a handling, safety, and storage course, along with their standard background check, with every firearms purchase. The measure would also mandate a restriction on magazine capacities, limiting all firearm magazines to ten rounds or less. Fortunately, at least three county sheriffs thus far have openly stated that they will refuse to enforce such a magazine restriction, many affirming that it is unconstitutional and will only hinder law-abiding citizens. Linn County sheriff, Michelle Duncan, stated, “This measure is poorly written and there is still a lot that needs to be sorted out regarding the permitting process, who has to do the training and what exactly does the training have to cover.”
