In-the-News Update [Issue: Basic Freedoms]

Dartmouth College is under scrutiny for being yet another university that uses ‘security concerns’ as a way to block conservative guest speakers from presenting. Dartmouth specifically is being challenged by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) and the Hanover Police Department for its claims. The college canceled conservative journalist Andy Ngo’s in-person event. They claimed the police advised them to do so for safety concerns. However, public records show the police did not make that recommendation to the school. The school proceeded to move the event to an online format. After doing so they charged the College Republicans a hefty bill of $3,600. The combination of the cancellation and the fee provides us with enough information to assume that Dartmouth’s view on freedom of speech may not be so free after all.
