Americans can look forward to worsening shortages of gasoline-powered cars in the coming years thanks to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA has set out new guidelines for auto manufacturers that require a 40% increase in vehicle MPG now and an additional 10% increase by 2026. This will cause a huge strain on the industry, as the regulations far exceed what manufacturers can historically keep up with. Typically the auto industry has seen a 3% increase in MPG each year, now they have to more than triple that expected progress.
