Netflix Threatens Georgia over Abortion Restrictions

The state of Georgia has recently passed a “Heartbeat Bill”, which prevents abortions from being performed after a baby’s heartbeat is detected. This law has been met with criticism from leftist organizations, and perhaps none more notable than streaming giant, Netflix (2.1 – Leaning Liberal).

Netflix has threatened to end all filming in Georgia locations if the law were to be put into effect. Netflix Chief Content Creator, Ted Sarandos, told Variety this:

We have many women working on productions in Georgia, whose rights, along with millions of others, will be severely restricted by this law. It’s why we will work with the ACLU and others to fight it in court. Given the legislation has not yet been implemented, we’ll continue to film there — while also supporting partners and artists who choose not to.

Netflix is constantly working to stay on top of the streaming world with sites like Hulu, HBO GO, Amazon Video, and many more nipping at their heels. Why would Netflix choose to alienate a large group of people (Pro-Lifers) by making statements like this? Conservative voices have already stated that if Netflix follows through on this claim, they will boycott Netflix.

Most companies have chosen to not comment on this political issue. This neutrality has kept them out of harm’s way and allowed them to continue business as usual. These industries see the benefit of keeping their company neutral in the world of politics, which allows them to focus on providing the best product or service possible.
