Several sources are reporting today that Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has endorsed Hillary Clinton’s candidacy for the presidency. The news comes as hardly a surprise given the close ties between Schultz, Starbucks and the Clinton family.
After all, Starbucks has helped sponsor the Clinton Global Initiative and is also a corporate donor to the Center for American Progress, which is known as “Hillary’s Think Tank” and was founded by Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.
Schultz’s left-leaning tendencies are no secret either. In 2013, he doubled-down on Starbucks’ support for same-sex marriage at a company shareholders’ meeting and hinted that stock owners who disagreed should divest of their investments. Schultz spearheaded a controversial effort to encourage discussions on sensitive racial issues between Starbucks employees and customers earlier in 2016, an initiative that the company would eventually abandon.
Furthermore, Starbucks as a company has mirrored its CEO’s activism on divisive issues. Not only coffee maker supported liberal organizations like Planned Parenthood and the Human Rights Campaign, but Starbucks has also publicly opposed the implementation of RFRA legislation that affirms religious liberty protections for small business owners.
Yet, when Starbucks reported lower than expected growth numbers earlier this summer, Schultz blamed “political turmoil” for the company’s underperformance. Apparently, despite leading one of the most politically active corporations, the irony is lost on Schultz.
In addition to public advocacy, the latest research shows that Starbucks supports liberal advocacy groups across the board on issues ranging from Education to Immigration. Click here to see the Starbucks scorepage, which shows just how the company follows the lead of its CEO.
