09 Jul The Company Contrast – Hershey’s Chocolate
Each week 2ndVote takes a look at a popular company that scores poorly on the 2ndVote scoring system and then provides some better alternatives for you to easily align your shopping dollars with your values. This series is called The Company Contrast, and the company we will be focusing on this week is Hershey’s Chocolate (1.86).
Hershey’s is one of the largest chocolate and baked products manufacturers in the world and certainly one of the most recognizable brands as well. Famous for being the go-to for treats like smores, Hershey’s advocacy is unfortunately not so sweet. Having partnerships with organizations like United Way and the HRC, Hershey’s scores very poorly on the Key Issues of Life, Marriage, 1st Amendment/Religious Liberty, and Environment.
Fortunately, there are actually quite a few alternative brands of chocolate to satisfy your craving. Godiva (3.00), Lindt & Sprungli (3.00), and Ghirardelli (3.00) all score neutrally and have not demonstrated any particular advocacy. These options and more offer all the goodness of chocolate without any of the guilt for your values. Although some of these brands can be a bit pricier, you can rest assured that you won’t be supporting some not so sweet agendas.
