The Company Contrast Navigating the Non-Profits – AFL-CIO {Issues: ALL}

Each week 2ndVote takes a look at popular companies that score poorly and then provides alternatives that either better align with your 2ndVote values or should be avoided to the best of your ability. This series is called The Company Contrast – Navigating the Non-Profits, and the organization we will be focusing on this week is the AFL-CIO (1.33).

The AFL-CIO, or American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations was founded in 1955 at the merger of the two separate AFL and CIO organizations. The AFL-CIO serves as the largest federation of labor unions in the country and comprises over 12 million active and retired laborers. As a federation of unions, it is only natural that the AFL-CIO involves itself in a variety of activism. Unfortunately, the AFL-CIO has put included itself on the side of the Left, advocating for issue items like abortion, sanctuary cities, common core education, and cap-and-trade policies. At the same time, the organization has sponsored other organizations that support abortion and oppose religious liberty protections. Consequently, the AFL-CIO has earned low scores on almost all of the 2ndVote key issues.

As far as activist organizations go, Americans for Prosperity (3.58) is a great alternative. Founded in 2004, Americans for Prosperity is a grassroots activist organization that emphasizes Libertarian and Conservative values. While they generally focus on economic and labor freedoms, Americans for Prosperity also takes strong stances on issues such as education, where they heavily promote school choice, the 1st Amendment, where they advocate for freedom of speech while also condemning riots, and the environment, where they oppose policies like carbon tax and the Green New Deal. Unfortunately, they do promote some unfavorable stances on DACA and DREAMers but still maintain a relatively Conservative overall score.
