The Company Contrast – Navigating the Non-Profits – Amnesty International

Each week 2ndVote takes a look at popular companies or organizations that either score well or score poorly.  We then try to provide alternatives that better align with the 2ndVote values. We’ve now expanded into nonprofits. This series is called The Company Contrast – Navigating the Non-Profits, and the charitable organizations we will be focusing on this week are Amnesty International (2.00) and Alliance Defending Freedom (4.00)

Founded in 1961 by British lawyer, Peter Benenson, Amnesty International is a global non-profit organization that focuses on education, mobilization, lobbying, and campaigning in the name of human rights all around the world. While Amnesty International’s efforts are well-intended, and likely justified in truly oppressive countries around the world, their advocacy lacks context when it comes to the United States. With the same fervor of addressing genocide and war crimes in third-world countries, Amnesty International promotes activism against traditional American values at home. A few of their “good works” include pro-abortion campaigns, opposition to RFRA bills and religious liberty protections, as well as opposition to Stand Your Ground laws and a near-apocalyptic perspective on gun control. All of this earns Amnesty International low scores on the issues of Life, 1st Amendment, and 2nd Amendment.

On the other hand, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) stands as a stalwart advocate and protector of American values, with the 1st Amendment and religious freedom being their primary focus. Not only does ADF promote positive messaging to try to improve the culture of religious liberty, but they are also heavily involved in litigation and court cases that threaten or have the potential to strengthen our rights. Having been involved in 60 Supreme Court victories, ADF reports a record of approximately 80% of their cases ending in a win and involvement in hundreds of international legal matters regarding religious liberty. ADF also promotes pro-life and anti-Common Core education stances, offering legal counsel in defense to boot. These factors earn the ADF high marks on the issues of 1st Amendment, Life, and Education.
