The Company Contrast Navigating the Non-Profits – Tides Foundation {Issues: Life, 1st Amendment, 2nd Amendment, Education, Environment}

Each week 2ndVote takes a look at popular companies that score poorly and then provides alternatives that better align with your 2ndVote values. This series is called The Company Contrast – Navigating the Non-Profits, and the organization we will be focusing on this week is the Tides Foundation (1.33).

Founded in 1976, in San Francisco, by Drummond Pike, the Tides Foundation was started with the primary purpose of connecting donors with socially progressive organizations. From the start, and continuing to the present day, the Tides Foundation has served as a middle-man by directing charitable donations from donor-advised funds to leftist organizations. With contributions going directly to organizations like Planned Parenthood, YWCA, Urban League, and more that support pro-abortion stances, oppose RFRA policies, and support the repeal of Stand Your Ground laws, the Tides Foundation loses major points on the 2ndVote issues of Life, 1st & 2nd Amendments, Education, and Environment.

On the other hand, The Salvation Army (3.67) serves as a prime example of what charity can look like when guided by faith. Founded in 1865, The Salvation Army began as a Christian mission to provide for the poor, destitute, and hungry by meeting their “physical and spiritual” needs. The organization generally maintains their original mission and traditional forms of charity today, with additional works like disaster relief and family tracing. Due to their strong, faith-based foundation, as well as their determined pro-life stance, The Salvation Army earns points on the issues of Life and the 1st Amendment.
