Each week 2ndVote takes a look at popular companies that either score well or score poorly and then try to provide alternatives that either better align with the 2ndVote values or should be avoided to the best of your ability. This series is called The Company Contrast, and the company we will be focusing on this week is Square, Inc. (2.00).

Founded in 2009 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, Square, Inc. is one of the fastest-growing and most popular merchant payment processing companies in the country. As the exclusive payment processor used by major companies such as Starbucks and Whole Foods Markets, Square, Inc. has proven itself to follow suit in the trends of Liberal activism. As a member of the business coalition behind the Equality Act, Square, Inc. clearly supports some of the mandates within the act that infringes upon business owners’ religious liberty rights. Furthermore, in 2013, Square, Inc. updated their user terms of service to refuse payment processing for all firearm or firearm-related transactions, all but cutting off the firearms industry from yet another means of conducting business. For these reasons, and also due to partnerships with organizations that support sanctuary cities, Square, Inc. receives low marks on the 2ndVote issues of 1st Amendment, 2nd Amendment, and Border Security/Immigration.

Fortunately, if you’re a small business owner that stands by their values, Cornerstone Payment Systems (3.67) offers a great alternative for your payment processing needs. As a Christian-owned and operated business, Cornerstone serves ministries across America and openly states that they refuse to process transactions for “morally objectionable businesses,” including any business related to abortion services. For being a faith-based business, and maintaining a pro-life stance, Cornerstone Payment Systems receives high scores on the issues of 1st Amendment and Life, making them a great option for anyone looking to switch merchant processors, or simply trying to start an at-home business!
