Target announces change in gun policy.

Target announced this morning that they are asking customers not to bring firearms in to their stores in open carry law states. According to CEO John Mulligan, bringing firearms into Target “creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create.”

Although Target is not banning customers outright from bringing guns into their stores, the company issuing a blanket policy that negatively impacts legal gun owners shows a public effort to oppose 2nd Amendment rights for citizens.  As a result, we have had to drop their score on the 2nd Amendment issue. Target’s 2nd Vote Second Amendment scorewent from a neutral score of 3 to a lean liberal score of 2.

Mulligan stated on the company’s blog: “There has been a debate about whether guests in communities that permit “open carry” should be allowed to bring firearms into Target stores. Our approach has always been to follow local laws, and of course, we will continue to do so. But starting today we will also respectfully request that guests not bring firearms to Target – even in communities where it is permitted by law.”
