While parts of the country are becoming more and more numb to the idea that prematurely ending the lives of infants is wrong, there are those of us who refute that notion and want to help make a change for the better. Sure, it seems like a tall task. It can be hard to feel like you can make a true difference without being a politician of some sort, but a simple change in your daily shopping routine can make all the difference in the world.
2ndVote tracks where companies donate your hard-earned dollars so that you, as a consumer, can feel comfortable buying certain products. If news of these recently passed or proposed abortion laws nauseates you, then surely you wouldn’t write a check out to Planned Parenthood — the primary supplier of abortions in the U.S. and an organization whose number one goal is to remain in that standing — would you? While we sincerely hope the answer to that is a resounding “no“, buying that cup of coffee from Starbucks, or that pint of ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s, can still fund the organizations that oppose the values you hold, including Planned Parenthood.
That’s why we encourage you to use your 2ndVote, your shopping dollars, to help make that change. And this isn’t just conjecture on our part; we know that you can make a difference. Not long ago, 2ndVoters and the pro-life movement successfully petitioned Chili’s Restaurants to discontinue fundraisers for Planned Parenthood in two states. We’ve also seen companies like AT&T, Macy’s, Coca-Cola, Ford, and Xerox distance themselves from the abortion giant after the financial ties came to light. People like you engaged these companies and said that unless they changed, your money would go elsewhere — their competitors even — and it worked.
This country needs a change now more than ever, and you can be a part of it. We’ve seen it evidenced before, and we are working towards making it happen again. Our page of Planned Parenthood donors, either direct or through a third-party, is larger than we’d ever thought we’d see it, but with your help we can trim it down one company at a time.
So, whenever your next coffee break is, or whenever you want to relax and watch a movie with a bowl of ice cream: skip the Starbucks or the Ben & Jerry’s. Use our research to learn which companies donate to Planned Parenthood and find a Better Alternative (at the bottom of company score pages) that fits your values and won’t violate your moral code.
Remember that your money has an impact far beyond the product that you get in return, and your shopping decisions can support your values every day, the same way you vote in support of your values on election day.
